Chris Judd to Carlton

CHRIS Judd says he chose Carlton because they are a powerful club and are going places. The Blues and West Coast completed their trade deal for the Brownlow medallist late in Trade week.

Judd says he was always confident that the clubs would agree on trade and deal.

Judd also said that the past few weeks had been "pretty hectic" but he was delighted to have the paperwork completed and with his move to Carlton signed, sealed and delivered.

Judd is thought to be getting a five-year, million contract with the Blues which will complete the biggest player transfer since Tony Lockett left St Kilda for Sydney in 1994.

Carlton completed the (I think cheap) trade with key forward Josh Kennedy and first and second round selections, number three and 20 overall, in the national draft in return for Judd and the Eagles' third-round selection, number 46 overall.

"I didn't have huge doubts that the deal would get done," Judd said at a media conference at Carlton's Princes Park headquarters.

Judd said that he had selected Carlton because he thought they were a "powerful Melbourne club" that was going places (cough).

"They have got a young and exciting list," Judd said.

"I could be part of something from the ground up, that was the exciting part of it for me."

Judd had battled a groin injury for the second half of the season and had an operation in Sydney two weeks ago (The Blues will be preying that the injury wont return in 2008).

He said the surgery has helped ease some of the pain in his groin, but he will know more at a check-up in six weeks.

Carlton chief executive Greg Swann hailed it a "fantastic day" for the Blues after a "few anxious moments on the way".

"It's one of the most important days we've had here (at the football club)," Swann said.

"Chris Judd is the premier player in the competition and will be a major boost to Carlton as the club embarks on what is a new and exciting era. We look forward to officially welcoming Chris to the Carlton Football Club later this afternoon," Mr Swann said.

Conclusion :

Whilst Carlton has got the good end of the bargain, there's still many factors involved including the slug out of the salary cap, the dodgy groin and ankle problems (The Blues will be hoping that it wont return) and the longevity of Judd's career and on Judd's side of the deal - will Carlton be a (serious) finals contender in the next 5 to 10 years / until the end of Judds playing career, it would be a shame for Judd to finish at a poor performing club.

Judd Set To return to Victoria

Like so many other AFL clubs in this year of generational change for the competition, West Coast are going to have to say goodbye to a club great.

But unlike James Hird at Essendon, Anthony Koutoufides at Carlton, Mark Ricciuto at Adelaide and Glenn Archer at the Kangaroos, Eagles fans will have to stomach the sight of Chris Judd in someone else's colours next year.

West Coast's pain of surrendering their AFL premiership on Friday night was dwarfed by the news their captain and two-time club champion Judd had decided to return to Victoria after six years in the west.

After months of speculation and consistent refusals by the Eagles' skipper to discuss his future publicly, West Coast bosses and coach John Worsfold were told at lunchtime they were losing their best player.

The shock felt in Perth and beyond was immediately clear when talkback callers rang radio stations in tears and high profile fans such as WA cricket coach Tom Moody and boxer Danny Green expressed their shock.

And the curt nature of West Coast's statement confirming their worst fears - "The West Coast Eagles are extremely disappointed with the decision" - spoke more than any number of paragraphs could.

Conclusion :

Let the bidding wars begin .... the big questions will be who can afford a player of Judd's expense, Judd would have to be the highest paid footballer of all time and the new salary wil be more than his previous contract, this means the club who scores the champ' will need to make way for the expensive Judd' by either swapping or dumping some high profile players, and West Coast wont be letting him go cheaply and nor will rival clubs - WestCoasts extended salary cap is a bonus in these situations.

Look for key clubs such as Carlton (possibly with a high draft pick trade) and Fevola trade (bait) ....

West Coast Eagles smash the Lions - AFL Blog

West Coast has kept its unbeaten record intact and,
in the process, snatched top spot on the ladder with a thumping
59-point victory over Brisbane at Subiaco Oval on Saturday night.

Captain Chris Judd was simply unstoppable in another scintillating
performance that's sure to do his Brownlow chances no harm,
the 22-year-old finishing with 38 quality possessions and
four goals in a best on ground performance.

Big man Dean Cox dominated the ruck, while Chad Fletcher
(21 possessions), Rowan Jones (24), Tyson Stenglein (20),
and Andrew Embley were prolific throughout the night.

West Coast - already missing champion Ben Cousins with
a hamstring injury - was further weakened by the pre-match
withdrawal of star-midfielder Daniel Kerr with the flu,
but it mattered little as the Eagles proved their blue-chip
midfield was not the only weapon in their arsenal.

Judd got the Eagles off to a flier with the opening two goals
of the match, before the Lions hit back through
Ashley McGrath and Luke Power.

West Coast threatened to break open the game early in
the second when they raced out to a 21-point lead at the
five minute mark, before three quick goals to the Lions got
them back within three points.

The third quarter belonged to West Coast as its hard-running
midfield, led brilliantly by Judd, began to assert its
dominance on the game.

Any chance of a Brisbane comeback was snuffed out early
in the last, with goals to Daniel Chick and Adam Selwood
extending the lead to 56 points.

Leigh Matthews - who was coaching his
400th AFL match - believed his side ran out of steam
after half time and cited Judd as another on-baller -
following on from St Kilda's Nick Dal Santo and
Lenny Hayes a fortnight ago - to cause his team problems.

WEST COAST: 5.4, 9.7, 13.12, 18.14 (122)
BRISBANE: 4.2, 7.4, 8.8, 9.9 (63)

GOALS – West Coast: Judd 4, Chick 3, Cox 2,
